Dynamic free shipping thresholds: +9% AOV with one change

Static free-shipping thresholds ("free over $75") leave money on the table. Dynamic thresholds — calculated from cart composition and customer history — outperform consistently.

The logic

At cart-update time, look at: customer’s historical AOV, cart contents, and current promotions. Set the threshold to ~110-120% of their AOV but never below the cart subtotal. Show progress toward it on the cart drawer.

Real wins

Across 12 implementations, AOV moved between +6% and +14% with a median of +9%. Implementation cost: ~2 days.

Personalize the threshold, not the cart.
